Looking ahead: 2023 and last post!

Reading time: two minutes

Preparing for the year ahead

I hope you all had a chance to take a break from studying and applications over the winter break. I understand that there are students who are currently busy preparing for exams or interviews. We’re well into January and so I thought I’d write a short post on preparing for the year ahead as a university student and an aspiring solicitor.

If you’re someone who finds motivation from goal or resolution-setting, I’ve found that having small, tangible goals helps when working towards a bigger goal. For example, if your goal is to secure a training contract, you might find it motivating to achieve smaller goals such as reading the news for 10 minutes every morning. I found that listening to the Financial Times’ 10 minute podcast every morning is really helpful in improving and keeping up with my commercial awareness. You can then set goals such as writing on a topic that you’re passionate about once a month. The bottom line is that all of these small wins add up to a bigger achievement.

To stay accountable for your goals, you could always get a friend to ask about your progress in a few months or at the end of the year. In this way, you’ll be motivated to keep working on your goals and resolutions. In addition, it’s always nice to work with someone in the same position as you.

Lastly, this is a reminder to see how far you’ve come. Perhaps a year ago you’d never have known what mergers and acquisitions means (like me), let alone what lawyers do in the commercial world. Getting into a career in law is incredibly competitive and requires resilience and patience. Therefore, this is a reminder to be patient with your progress!

Last post!

This will be my last post for LCN. It was great working with the LCN team; being part of LCN allowed me to improve my commercial awareness and critical understanding of current affairs. I hope you’ve enjoyed my posts and feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn if you have any questions. For all aspiring solicitors reading the post, I wish you all the best in your journey!
