Ocean CVC Word Mats
This CVC activity comes with 5 CVC word mats – one for each middle vowel sound. Each mat has an ocean theme with either a whale or a fish on it. These fun mats will give students lots of practice with a variety of phonics skills. Add them to your literacy centers for so much fun and learning.
Your students will use their knowledge of letters and sounds to feed the word to the whale or fish and write the word on the handwriting lines.

Practicing Phonics Skills
For this activity, students will roll a die and find the picture that corresponds to the number they rolled.
They will then say the word out loud, isolate each sound and spell the CVC word by feeding the letters to the whale or fish.
Finally, they will write the word at the bottom of the mat. Then clear the mat and roll again.
You could even provide students with a recording sheet and have them write each spelling word on that after they build it on the mat.
Learning to Read, Write and Spell CVC Words
There are a variety of ways that these ocean CVC word mats can be differentiated to teach CVC words and meet the needs of your students.
Since there are five different mats, you can start by having your students complete only one mat. As their skills progress, they can work their way up to completing 2 mats and then more!
They can use letter magnets, letter beads or letter tiles to build the words.
Another way to use this activity is to give a small group of students play dough and they can use stamps to stamp the letters in the dough. Or they can build the word with play dough on the mats.
An added sensory option is always a great way to engage reluctant learners. Plus, adding in fine motor work for all your little learners is great for their hand strength and fine motor skills.
There are lots of fun ways to use these mats and I am sure the kids will find them engaging.
