What to Expect: Service dogs, travel, airplanes, and learning

As a sequel to Piki Goes to College, Piki Goes Flying offers readers even more information about and insight into the life and role of a service dog.

Piki, the service dog, is used to learning new skills and behaviors to support her human, Joan. But she’s never had to learn as many new things as she does when Piki accompanies Joan on an airplane: from where to sit to how to cope with having her vest and collar removed and the loud noise of the plane engines. Piki navigates exciting and sometimes frightening new experiences as she helps Joan on the airplane and at the airport. Through excellent training, love, and trust for Joan, Piki demonstrates how valuable service animals can be.

Narrated through the voice of Piki herself, the story highlights Piki’s questions and opinions, inviting readers to think about disability and service animal rules and regulations from a fresh, new perspective. Piki is an engaging character, brought to life through expressive, colorful illustrations. Readers will not only learn more about service animals and the rules that apply to them but will also see the world from an animal’s unique perspective.

About the Author

This is Joan M. Hellquist’s third children’s book and second Piki adventure book. Joan has been an artist all of her life, but writing and illustration are relatively new for her. Joan has had her own business, Artistic Endeavors, for many years, which has included her drawing, painting, photography, and now her writing and illustrating children’s books.

Joan is a trained Service Dog instructor/trainer, and Piki (rhymes with sneaky) is her own Service Dog. In Joan’s Piki books, she lets Piki tell her own story about things that actually occurred during training and during her first flights.

Throughout her life, Joan has been especially drawn to children and animals. Previously, Joan worked with children as a Physician Assistant. She now works with eight to ten-year-olds who have lost a loved one as a volunteer bereavement facilitator at the Grief Center in Albuquerque, NM.

Joan firmly believes that children and animals are kindred spirits who share their innocence, wisdom, and unconditional love with the rest of us.
