What to do if you have no direction in life

Have you ever felt like life is happening to you? Perhaps you feel lost, stranded at sea, floating through life whichever way the wind blows.

Many of us have had times like this. Perhaps we’ve lost touch with ourselves, a relationship has ended/changed or we simply don’t recognise who we are anymore. Being untethered in this way can be difficult – after all, if we lose our direction in life, how can we move forward?

If you’re keen to find a direction and take charge of your life, there are a few steps that might help.

Check in with your values

Our values are like guideposts, helping us stay true to ourselves and on track. If you’re feeling lost, a good port of call is to re-examine your values and what they mean to you. To help with this, we have a step-by-step guide to identifying your core values.

Once you’ve identified your values you can plot these against your life, are you living in alignment with your values? What needs to change to help you do this? Remember, our values can change and evolve over time, so checking in with them regularly is key.

Set goals

Hopefully, by checking in with your values you’ll have a better idea of the direction you want to go in life. You don’t need something concrete, but even a fuzzy vision of how you want things to be can help. Setting yourself goals is like making yourself a map of how to get there.

What goals can help you move forward? Are they realistic and achievable? What will support you as you pursue these goals?

Become more present in your life

Sometimes we lose direction because we live life on autopilot, getting swept away by day-to-day life and stress. Finding a way to be more present in our lives can encourage us to take stock of what’s working and what’s not, helping us find our direction. It can help us feel more in control, savouring moments and celebrating wins so days don’t speed past in a daze.

Try mindfulness and reflective practices to help you be more present. This could include regular meditation, journaling, making art, taking more photos, or spending time in nature.

Get some support

All of the above can be done alone, but may be enhanced (and fast-tracked) with the help of a life coach. Coaching can offer a space to explore your values, with your coach asking questions that bring to light previously unknowable ideas. A coach can help you figure out which goals will serve you, and offer a sense of accountability as you work towards them. Coaching also gives you time to reflect on what’s working, helping you to tune in and be more present in your life.
