I haven’t written much lately, but I have read a LOT. I just finished book number 42 of the year, and I’ve really discovered some gems!
Over the next few days, I hope to share my favorites organized by genre.
Here is the line-up: Romance/Chick Lit, Young Adult, Historical Fiction, Mysteries/Thrillers, Other, and Professional Development.

The best part about my reading life this year? I’ve only bought maybe five books TOTAL! And those were PD books. I signed up for our local library’s ebook borrowing system through Libby and my life is changed! WOOHOO!! I HIGHLY recommend looking into this if you read on a Kindle, Nook, or iPad!
Romance / Chick Lit
Warning: I’m terrible at telling what a book is about. I read them quickly and enjoy them or I don’t. So I’m linking to the book on Amazon where you can read the synopsis. All I’m saying here is “read it”! 🙂
- My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren
This is a fun read! It’s the story of a girl and her four best guy friends, one of whom might be more than just a friend. I found it to be enjoyably different than the typical chick-lit book. The female narrator didn’t get on my nerves, so that was a plus. There are some racy bits, so beware if that’s not your thing, but I just felt like the whole book was really well done. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
- Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev
This was a super cute read built around the premise of Pride and Prejudice (obv). It tells the story of a famous neurosurgeon and a chef falling in love, despite their differences (ethnicity, socio-economic, etc.) It was a cute read. I love books with some culture!
- The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
I enjoyed this book, mostly because I love books where we get to connect with characters who are on the Autism spectrum. I’m not sure why, but I’ve found myself drawn to those books lately. Honestly, even though they are just pleasure reading, I find they help me understand my students (and others) better. This is the story of a girl on a mission for a boyfriend, and she uses an escort service to get started. It’s quite racy–so you might squirm a bit–but I thought it was quite good
- Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye
This was a slow read, but still worth it. The narrator is both a murderer and a lover of Jane Eyre. The plot loosely follows Eyre’s own experiences (well, plus some murder). I enjoyed it once I really got into it, it just took a little longer than I’d like.
- Match Making for Beginners by Maddie Dawson
I actually read this book last year, but I enjoyed it so much I had to share it on this list. That title though, ugh. I can hardly believe I picked it with that title, but I did and I’m glad. Gist: girl’s marriage ends quickly, inherits a house in Brooklyn with a quirky cast of characters attached, and, of course, a sweet little love story. Highly recommend.
