There are two uses of the word “ไม่ได้ mâi dâai” which could be confusing for some students. Let’s clarify this grammar rule today.
Rule number 1:
Verb + ไม่ได้ mâi dâai = Can not do something.
Rule number 2:
ไม่ได้ mâi dâai + verb = Didn’t do something
Examples: Can not do something
ชั้นพูดภาษาไทยไม่ได้
/chán pûut paa-sǎa Thai mâi dâai/
I can not speak Thai (Female speakers)
ผมพูดภาษาไทยไม่ได้
/pǒm pûut paa-sǎa Thai mâi dâai./
I can not sepaek Thai (Male speakers)
ชั้นกินอาหารเผ็ดไม่ได้
/chán gin aa-hǎan pèd mâi dâai/
I can not eat spicy food (Female speakers)
ผมกินอาหารเผ็ดไม่ได้
/pǒm gin aa-hǎan pèd mâi dâai/
I can not eat spicy food (Male speakers)
ผมทำอาหารไม่ได้
/pǒm tam aa-hǎan mâi dâai/
I can not cook (Male speakers)
ชั้นทำอาหาร
/chán tam aa-hǎan mâi dâai/
I can nor cook (Female speakers)
Example: Did not do something (Negative past tense)
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปทำงาน
/mûa-waan pǒm mâi dâai bpai tam-ngaan/
Yesterday I did not go to work.(Male speakers)
เมื่อวานชั้นไม่ได้ไปทำงาน
/mûa-waan chán mâi dâai bpai tam-ngaan./
Yesterday I did not go to work. (Female speakes)
เมื่อเช้าชั้นไม่ได้คุยกับเค้า
/mûea-cháao chán mâi dâai kui gàb káo/
I did not talk to him this morning.(Female speakers)
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้คุยกับเค้า
/mûea-cháao pǒm mâai dâai kui gàb káo/
I did not talk to him this morning. (Male speakers)
ปีที่แล้วผมไม่ได้ไปประเทศไทย
/bpii tîi-láew pǒm mâi dâai bpai bpra-tâet Thai/
Last year I did not go to Thailand. (Male speakers)
ปีที่แล้วชั้นไม่ได้ไปประเทศไทย
/bpii tîi-láew chán mâi dâai bpai bpra-tâet Thai/
Last year I did not go to Thailand. (Female speakers)
ได้ /dâai/ + noun = To get
ชั้นเพิ่งได้งานใหม่
/chán pêrng dâai ngaan mài/
I just got a new job (Female speakers)
ผมเพิ่งได้งานใหม่
/pǒm pêrng dâai ngaan mài/
I just got a new job (Male speakers)
ได้ dâai + Verb = Get to do something.
ปีที่แล้วผมได้ไปประเทศไทย
/bpii tîi-láew pǒm dâai bpai bpra-tâet Thai/
Last year I got to go to Thailand (Male speakers).
ปีที่แล้วชั้นไปได้ประเทศไทย
/bpii tîi-láew chán dâai bpai bpra-tâet Thai/
Last year I got to go to Thailand (Female speakers).
เมื่อคืนชั้นได้กินอาหารไทย
/mûea-kuen chán dâai gin aa-hǎan Thai/
Last night I got to eat Thai food (Female speakers).
เมื่อคืนผมได้กินอาหารไทย
mûa-kuen pǒm dâai gin aa-hǎan Thai
Last night I got to eat Thai food (Male speakers).
