In Thai, we use the word “มาก [mâak]” after an adjective to intensify it. For example, we say “สวยมาก [sǔai mâak]” for “very beautiful” and “ใหญ่มาก [mâak]” for “very big.” While it’s extremely useful and easy to use, it can get boring to use just this one word for every adjective. Also, it doesn’t express as strong emotion as you might want to. While you can use “โคตร [kôde]” to better express how you feel (for example “หนาวโคตร” [nǎao kôde] “so/super cold”), it may not always be an appropriate word to use as it can be regarded as impolite in certain contexts.
Good news is there are other words you can use to say “very” or “so” instead. Certain words (adjectives) in Thai have their own special intensifiers (adverbs) which are only used with them. It’s pretty much like when you use a specific word to modify a certain descriptive word in English like “pitch black,” “rock hard,” “dirt cheap,” or “brand new.” Just like in English, these words are used in pairs and can’t be swapped.
We’ve listed some of the most common and useful ones below. While you may not come across these expressions so often, know that they’re extremely common and used by native speakers all the time. We encourage you to try using these words to describe things instead of using “มาก [mâak]” all the time. Your Thai friend will certainly be impressed when they hear you use them and it will make you sound more like a native speaker.
1. ดำ(ปิ๊ด)ปี๋ [dam (pít) pǐi] very/so black
ขาวจั๊วะ [kǎao jǔa] very/so white
แดงแจ๊ด [daeng jáet] very/so red
เขียวปี๋ [kǐao pǐi] very/so green
เหลืองอ๋อย [leǔang ǒy] very/so yellow

[Hǒ, taa pàak maa sá daeng jáet loei ná]
Wow, your lips are so red! (from lipstick)
2. เค็มปี๋ [kem pǐi] very/so salty
หวานจ๋อย [wǎan jǒy] very/so sweet
เปรี้ยวจี๊ด [prîao jíit] very/so sour
ขมปี๋ [kǒm pǐi] very/so bitter
เผ็ดจี๊ด [pèt jíit] very/so spicy
จืดสนิท [jeut sanìt] very/so bland

[chocolate níi mâi aròi loei, kǒm pǐi]
This chocolate doesn’t taste good at all. It’s super bitter.
3. มันแผล็บ [man plàeb] very/so oily
อิ่มแปล้ [ìm plâe] very/so full
หิวโฮก [hǐw hôke] very/so hungry
ร้อนจี๋ [ráwn jǐi] very/so hot
เย็นเจี๊ยบ [yen jíab] very/so cold

How could you touch it? It’s very cold!
4. ใหญ่เบอเริ่ม [yài ber rêum] very/so big
เล็กกระจิ๊ดริด [lék gajítrít] very/so small
ยาวเฟี้อย [yaao feǔai] very/so long
สั้นจู๋ [sân jǔu] very/so short
ใหม่เอี่ยมอ่อง [mài ìam òng] very/so new

[hǒ, avocado kǎwng tîi nǎi nîa, yài ber rêum loei]
Where is this avocado from? It’s huge!
5. บางเฉียบ [baang chìap] very/so thin
หนาเตอะ [nǎa tèr] very/so thick
หนักอึ้ง [nàk êung] very/so heavy
เบาโหยง [bao yǒng] very/so light
คมเฉียบ [kom chìap] very/so sharp

แม่อุ้มหนูไหวอยู่แล้ว ตัวเบาโหยง
[mâe ûm nǔu wǎi yùu léaw, tua bao yǒng]
Of course Mommy can carry you, darling. You’re super light.
6. แข็งโป้ก [kǎeng pôke] very/so hard
อ่อนปวกเปียก [àwn pùak pîak] very/so soft
กลมดิ๊ก [glom dík] very/so round
ตรงเป๊ะ [trong pé] very/so straight
เอียงกระเท่เร่ [iang gratâyrây] very/so bent
แบนแต๊ดแต๋ [ban táet tǎe] very/so flat

พิซซ่านี่อบนานเกินไปแล้ว แข็งโป้กเลย
[pizza nîi, òb naan gern pai léaw, kǎeng pôke loei]
You baked this pizza for too long. It’s rock hard.
7. หล่อเฟี้ยว [làw fíao] very/so handsome
สูงชะลูด [sǔng chalûut] very/so tall
เตี้ยม่อต้อ [tîa mâw tâw] very/so short
ผอมกะหร่อง [pǒm garàwng] very/so thin
รวยเละ [ruai lé] very/so rich
เมาเละ [mao lé] very/so drunk

ถ้าธุรกิจนี้เวิร์คนะ รวยเละแน่ พวกเรา
[tâa túrágìt níi work ná, ruai lé nâe, pûak rao]
If this business goes well, we’ll be filthy rich.
8. สว่างจ้า [sawàang jâa] very/so bright
มืดตึ๊ดตื๋อ [meùt téut těu] very/so dark
หอยฉุย [hǒm chǔi] very/so fragrant
เหม็นหึ่ง [měn hèung] very/so smelly
เปียกแฉะ [pìak chàe] very/so wet

ฝนตกลงมาตลอดทาง เปียกแฉะหมดเลย
[fǒn tòk long maa talàwt taang, pìak chàe mòt loei]
It’d been raining all the way until I got here. Now I’m all wet.
9. เงียบฉี่ [ngîab chìi] very/so quiet
เจ๋งเป้ง [jěng pêng] very/so cool
ใสแจ๋ว [sǎi jǎew] very/so clear (free from dust or dirt)
ชัดแจ๋ว [chát jǎew] very/so clear (not obscured or blurred)
ชัวร์ป้าป [sure pâap] very/so sure/ very/so certain

ฉันอีเมลไปหาเขาหลายรอบแล้วนะ แต่ยังเงียบฉี่อยู่เลย
[chán email pai hǎa káo lǎai râwp léaw ná, tàe yang ngîab chìi yùu loei]
I emailed him several times. But I still haven’t heard anything back.
Remark: Note that while we translate the words as “very/so…..,” in practice, the meaning is closer to “extremely…,” “totally….,” or “completely…..”
